It seems like a catastrophe when it happens, but having a tooth knocked out doesn’t always mean you’ll wind up with a gap in your smile. If you can keep a cool head and remember a few simple instructions, chances are your tooth can be salvaged. And if worse comes to worst, there are dental implants in Blue Ash and other Cincinnati suburbs.
If you have a tooth knocked out, the critical thing to remember is to find it, handle it carefully, and keep it in the best condition possible. Meanwhile, make a beeline to the emergency dentist.
Do not handle the tooth by the root, only the crown. It’s okay to gently rinse the tooth in water, but don’t scrub it or remove any tissue fragments.
If possible, place the tooth gently back in the socket. This is the best place for it. Holding it between the lip and gum or under the tongue is good, too; just be careful not to swallow. (Don’t laugh – it happens!) If neither of these is an option, place the tooth in a cup of milk.
Most teeth that can be reinserted by a dentist within an hour can be saved. If you get much beyond that, the odds go down. If you end up losing the tooth, a dental implant may be for you. An implant is a titanium post inserted directly into the jaw. An artificial tooth is fitted on top of it. Of course, you’d rather not have it knocked out, but implants have the look and function of a real tooth.
